We don’t usually like discussing raw numbers, unless of course those numbers say something really great about the cars we like. Typically, car insurance estimates do not satisfy our rule.
Today is different, though. Motor Trend is reporting on a few lists from Insure.com in which they estimated the average cost of insurance for some 850 2014 models and then ranked them. They published a list of the 20 most expensive cars to insure and a list of the 20 least expensive cars to insure, as well as a ranking of insurance costs in all fifty states.
Now the reason this article caught our eye is because the list of the 20 least expensive cars is dominated – we’re going to say it again, in italics this time – dominated by FCA cars. A staggering seven Jeep models made the list, with the Jeep Wrangler Sport carrying the day at number one. Two other Wrangler models are on there, along with the Patriot Sport (#3), the Compass Sport (#5), the Patriot Latitude, and the Grand Cherokee Laredo. Also making the list is the Chrysler Town & Country Touring, the Dodge Journey SE, and the Dodge Grand Caravan SE. That’s a total of ten Fiat-Chrysler brand cars on a list where the biggest number is $1209 to insure a car for a year.
Motor Trend says the reason Jeeps are so prevalent on the list is because for one, Jeep owners are safer drivers (naturally), and two, Jeeps are by their nature and design less expensive to repair. The list is also skewed toward SUVs/Crossovers because higher ground clearance reduces the damage they take from shorter cars in the event of a collision.
As for the state rankings, North Carolina’s average insurance premium is $1060, which is either the forty-fifth most expensive or the sixth least-expensive depending on which direction you’re counting from. All in all, if you live in NC and have a Jeep, you’ve got it made.
