Fuel efficiency regulations are a driving force in development these days. That in itself is not news.
What is news is the higher ups at Jeep are looking into ways to hybridize parts of their lineup. Car and Driver reported this week that Jeep designers were exploring the possibility but had not made any final decisions at this point. With a storied brand such as this one, no decisions are made lightly, least of all introducing hybrid technology to the most recognizable offroading vehicle out there.
With practically every other brand introducing a hybrid option in recent years, some of you may think of it as a no-brainer that Jeep would follow suit, but it takes more consideration with vehicles like these. There’s a reputation to uphold, and Jeep has concerns that the electric motors found in hybrids would not be durable or reliable enough in harsher, wilder environments. A likely solution could involve a form of diesel-electric engine, but that’s just speculation at this point.
It’s a challenge, for sure, but if any brand can rise to meet it, it’s Jeep. You can read more on Car and Driver.
