Much ado has been made about the Hellcat engine this year. Since its announcement, the 707-plus horsepower engine has been shown in the 2015 Dodge Charger and the 2015 Dodge Challenger. One is the fastest four-door car available. The other is the savior of the American muscle car.
Both of them have been totally outmatched by a car on display at the SEMA Show. We’re just glad it’s another car made by Mopar.
Photo: AutoblogMeet the 2015 Dodge Charger Funny Car. If you don’t frequent the drag strip, you probably aren’t in on the joke. A funny car is designed in such a way to maximize both aerodynamics and weight over the rear wheels. Their bodywork often extends well beyond the rear axle in order to balance out the weight of the engine mounted in front. Extra weight in the rear gives the car more traction while it accelerates off the line.
This is the first revision of the Charger Funny Car since 2006. The update includes a redesigned body that is stronger and lighter thanks to Kevlar and carbon fiber, yet it doesn’t lose any of its vaunted aerodynamics. Driver visibility has also been enhanced by moving the cockpit further back on the chassis.
For an idea of what kind of power this hot rod is packing, the outgoing version of the Charger Funny Car was the first drag racer to achieve a sub-four-second quarter mile time. Cars in this class frequently achieve speeds in excess of three-hundred miles-per-hour.
What we enjoy most about this car is the resemblance it bears to its production cousin. The crossbar grille in front looks like a decal, but it’s the thought that counts, and there are scallops on the side, which actually benefit structural integrity. The car will make its racing debut in February at the 2015 Winternationals.
We’re excited to be getting new Dodge models like the 2015 Charger and Challenger soon, so make sure you keep up with all the latest news from your local Dodge dealer, Leith Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM near Raleigh and Knightdale.
